Belgravia Community LeagueBelgravia is a walkable upper-middle class community in Edmonton. Its unique location in the city makes its residents especially sensitive to development, transportation, and security issues. The Belgravia Community League provides services and programs to its members; also, it is a liason for grassroots civic concerns. The BCL needed a polished means of communicating community news and events to residents of the neighborhood as well as to promote services and resources available to residents and visitors. The design reflects the pride and quality that is evident in the streets of Belgravia, while the content represents grass-roots democracy in action -- it enables community stakeholders to observe, comment on, and participate in the free exchange of ideas pertaining to community concerns. The BCL website presents articles organized in a variety of sections and categories, enabling browsers to quickly locate relevant information. An integrated calendar displays upcoming events, and the site can be configured to present polls and questionnaires to visitors. Electronic versions of the BCL Newsletter are available online, as well as BCL board meetings agendas and minutes. Neighborhood Watch participants can 'blog' safety and security concerns, and local businesses and enterprises can promote their services to local clientele. Content on the BCL website is easily editable by community contributors, such as the BCL commitee chairs and BCL board members. The site enables visitors to leave moderated comments about the articles they read, and therefore participate in the civic process. In future, a community message forum is being considered.
